Subject: Follow-Up Regarding Coyote Sighting –

We contacted Vaughan Animal Services regarding the recent coyote sighting at

. They advised that, while seeing a coyote can understandably be concerning, coyotes are common wildlife in urban and suburban areas and generally travel through neighbourhoods in search of food, water, or shelter.

To help reduce the likelihood of coyotes returning to the property or future encounters, Vaughan Animal Services has recommended the following:

Do not leave garbage, recycling, or compost outdoors overnight.

Please ensure all waste is properly secured and put out in accordance with the scheduled collection time.

Do not leave birdseed or other food sources outside.

If you have a bird feeder, please ensure that the area is kept clean and free of fallen seed.

, particularly during the early morning and evening hours when coyotes are more active.

Supervise small pets whenever they are outdoors

and do not leave them unattended in yards.

Remove potential food sources, including

We would also like to remind all residents that

. Despite our continuous requests and reminders, leaving food out for wildlife can attract coyotes and other animals to the property and increase the likelihood of encounters with residents and pets. Your cooperation is essential in keeping our community safe.

If you encounter a coyote at close range,

. Remain calm, maintain eye contact, make yourself appear larger by standing tall and raising your arms, and use a firm, authoritative voice to tell the coyote to leave. You may also clap your hands, wave your arms, or make other loud noises, such as using a whistle. This is known as

and can help reinforce coyotes' natural fear of people.

If you notice any changes in the coyote's behaviour or observe unusual or aggressive behaviour, please contact Vaughan Animal Services. If you have any questions, you may also call

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us maintain a safe environment for all residents, children, and pets.
